Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café
Located on the shores of Tae Rak (Lake Condah) in south western Victoria, it is one of the oldest and most extensive aquaculture sites in the world.
The Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café features a kooyang (eel) holding tank and processing facility, along with a retail space and bush tucker café. Visitors can try the signature Kooyang Tasting Plates at the centre.
The centre serves as a tourism hub where Gunditjmara people sustainably share knowledge and stories, enabling them to preserve their Country and culture. It was established to uphold and maintain the Gunditjmara community's ties to the traditional practice of kooyang (eel) farming and smoking for generations to come.
Visitors have the opportunity to participate in Gunditjmara guided cultural tours of the World Heritage-listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, where they can learn about the Gunditjmara people's history of utilizing natural resources and environment to create a lasting community over thousands of years.
Guided cultural tours and the sale of smoked kooyang to visitors will support sustainable employment for the Gunditjmara people in the country in alignment with the values of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape.
